Bang Your Drum

One thing I fear is asking for help. I am an independent person. If I admit that I need help then it must mean that I am not man enough…I don’t know how I got this way. Within the next few months I will be completely dependent upon others help. My family will be solely relying and surviving off of other people’s generosity because we will be living as missionaries. As I am asking God to soften my heart so that it is easier for me to ask for help, I made a vow to Him and myself. I vowed that we will continue to give and even give more than we already do to others, churches, and other ministries.
I am going to start right now.
There is someone I want you to meet. His name is Josh. I have known Josh since he was a squirrely little middle schooler. I was a youth pastor when I first met Josh. Josh was that kid…if you have ever been around youth ministry you know the kid I am talking about. The kid who is completely shelled up. The kid whose braces were designed for Mr. Ed yet were mistakenly put on him. The kid with the big bushy purple hair or was it red, no it was green…who knows. Josh didn’t talk much at all at first. He had a very similar upbringing as I did. His dad wasn’t in the picture in any manner and his mom didn’t care if he went to church or not. He was the typical “bus” kid.
I don’t know how I got the privilege of picking him up and dragging him to church every week. Most of the time this meant me pulling up to his house, honking, waiting, waiting, and waiting…and he would come running out as he was pulling a shirt over his head. I think he came out one time with two different shoes on. I ain’t going to lie this opportunity effected me as much as him. There were times I wanted to drive on by his house…for some reason I knew I had to stop.
Now Josh has a desire to be a missionary…he says it’s because of me…no I don’t buy that, it’s because of God. During this period of time I exposed Josh to a band called Thousand Foot Krutch…the old school TFK. He loved that stuff (Josh, I think you still have my CD). Josh started playing the drums. And if you check out his youtube channel you can see how talented he is, especially being self taught.
[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kgd6BDo57sM]
I will try to condense this as best as I can. Like I said, Josh is compelled to be a missionary but in the meantime he started putting up videos of himself doing cover songs on youtube. Somehow a former member of Dizmas came across Josh’s youtube page. This band member contacted Josh and as asked if he would be interested in playing drums with him! Josh didn’t know what to do because he felt he needed to be a missionary. Long story short, this guy is taking a new band on the road throughout Europe as they play in schools and share the gospel with kids. Josh, who graduated from high school in May, has an incredible opportunity to use his gift while at the same time sharing his faith as a missionary.
This is where I want to step in. Because this is a mission thing, it requires money. Josh has to raise $4500 dollars to go. Josh told me that, “God is in control, and since He is in control He also controls money.” Well said, I should learn from that. I want to help. I am going to support him as much as I possibly can. My pockets aren’t that deep so I can’t front $4500 bucks. I don’t have a huge following on this blog but I want to take a chance and ask for your help. Can you throw him a bone? Any amount will help. (Another reason I hesitate to ask for help is because I know people will question what I am actually doing with this money.) If you would like to offer some support shoot me an email, codyjknutson@gmail.com and I will get you the specifics on how to get the money to Josh.

God is "calling"

Being in Kansas the last 6 years, I have grown accustom to a literal harvest. Currently I work in the pneumatic conveying industry which caters to the middle men between the farmers and the end user of the grain products roller coaster ride. I have heard and seen the ups and downs of all parties within this uncontrollable game.
I know people who bet on the future value of a crop. I know people who put their lively hoods on the line in hopes of just breaking even. I will soon be working in the fields for the rights to hunt on a piece of property. As I think about the farmers themselves, I find myself being envious of their lifestyle. Why? Simply because their lives are never boring. They have control over nothing. They can’t control the price of diesel. They can’t control the rain. They can’t control the wind. They can’t control the dependability of their big green machines. They can’t control the man who determines the value of their product that they have labored over.
Yes, they can insure the entire operation. Have you ever had anything insured and unfortunately had to use its coverage? You only break even at best. Even if you have a stellar harvest, insurance always cuts into profit margin.
As I have tried to insert myself into the mission of God, I anticipate experiencing all the emotions that John Brown farmer understands. And this is a good thing.
I have heard so many missionaries who are stationed in foreign lands proclaim Matthew 9:37-38. ‘Then he [Jesus] said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.”
Whew! I get to sit on my butt. Man, I am glad Jesus didn’t call me out. He didn’t even say, “You.” Nope, Jesus’ instructions pertained to His disciples.
Wait a minute. Jesus’ description made it sound as if there was so much work to be done that His disciples wouldn’t be able to handle the work load on their own. And then there is the only actual instruction within these two verses. Do you see it? Jesus told them to ASK the Lord to send out workers into the field. Maybe, just maybe, these 12 men, at that moment, stopped and prayed for all believers. Maybe they prayed for future believers to take up their cross (Matt. 9:38). Maybe I was included in a prayer of Peter. You’re right, Peter never said, “Cody” in one of his prayers. But I would put my money on the fact that the disciples prayed for the future of Christ’s cause. I bet they prayed that every future believer would put their faith into action.
I don’t even want to get into Calvinism, predestination, or “getting em saved.” These arguments will always be debatable. However, there is no denying Christ in His instructions. He has called all who have been called to go into the world. Whether that is on main street or Moscow we have been called to do good works unto all men, for the soul purpose of revealing His love. Then they may be saved or then they may learn that they have been saved. Whichever floats your boat?
It’s as simple as offering a cup of water. Matt. 9:42
I feel I am getting off track a bit. My point isn’t to tell you what you should or shouldn’t be accomplishing. My point is that 3 days ago I asked people to offer a substitution for the word “call”. Not counting today, 198 people since Wednesday came across this blog either intentionally or unintentionally. And only 2 people commented. Or said differently, 1.01010101% responded on this blog to “God’s call.”
Of course I am nobody and if you read the post and didn’t comment, I am not judging you. Whether you commented or not has nothing to do with the level of your faith. But it made me think about the thousands, if not millions, of people of have read or heard Matthew 9:37-38 and Mark 16:15. Do you think the percentage who has responded to Christ’s call is the same?
I think so.
The reason, I believe, is the same reason most wouldn’t want to be a farmer. We always look at the physical side of life when we make decisions.
Nobody strives to wear overalls and smell like a bottle of Pennzoil. Being a farmer is definitely not a sure thing when comes to putting money in the bank. Farmers live a slow unfashionable lifestyle. They drive old beat up Ford trucks. They take the risk of their daughters running off with some ol’ boy with an ear ring. Farmers can not control anything. They have no idea how this season will turn out.
On the plus side, they do have land though. They get to eat a real breakfast everyday. They aren’t lazy. They continually get to breathe in and experience God’s creation. They get to drive old beat up Fords! They usually own four wheelers. They never have to call a mechanic. The have dog’s named Blue that never leave their side. The have a good woman who fries up chicken and brings them sweet tea in the heat of the day.
I guess when the day is over; living by faith isn’t that easy. The thought of being different is too much for most. But most of all, I believe when we as a society are told to do something, we instantly become selfish and believe our own agendas are more important. We must have control. And control is not an option if one truly lives by faith.
A surprise visit

We went along on a trip to suprise a pair of sisters at this home. I’m guessing the home is about 5000ft up the mountain. The guy in the green is Omar, he is a part of 6:8 ministries. The guy in the gray is Jorge, he is the pastor of the new church plant. A few days ago these two were walking down from the top of the mountain with a team. Jorge stopped to talk to one of the sisters. Omar says after about a 2 minute conversation, Jorge yells loudly, “At this moment this woman has accepted Christ!”
Jorge praying for one of the sisters in their kitchen. We brought rice, beans, sugar, eggs, and fruit. They also provided a Santa Biblia. Unfortunately, they can not read. No worries though, they were also given a solar powered audio bible!
The road we took to get to their home. I know I needed to sale my Jeep but I couldn’t help but think about how useful it would be here.
However, without a Jeep payment, I should be able to save up and pay cash for a rad ride like this.
Jasmine

The barrio of Jasmine.
Me and the kid from about half way up, looking down. Most think about the difficulties of carrying water up this hill everyday. Look on the plus side, no one could call you lazy and you would probably have a better butt.
The home a team built last week. It was built in less than a week so you can imagine the bareness of it. I believe I built forts no more elaborate than this. But it’s a freaking house. $3000 dollars for this yellow house. It’s better than Extreme Makeover Home Edition.
The laundry mat.

The view down from the laundry mat. Some things just out weigh others. Such as stay and keep up with the Jones’ or wake up with views like this and have extremely fresh coffee every day.

Stephanie and Kyah in a home we were invited into. I still can’t get over the roughness of these homes and yet I hear tvs a radios blaring. While my girls were holding this baby I was watching U2, Eminem, and Linkin Park videos on and VCR.

Just some explanation about what we will be doing in Costa Rica. Essentially we will become a part of 6:8 Ministries. They focus on offering affordable mission trips in Costa Rica and Guatemala. Who knows where else God will also take it. The board and its staff (supported by others) have given the ministry the ability to grow effectively. The money that teams pay ($200) to participate on a trip goes solely to what happens on the ground. The money pays for lodging, food, and aids in ministry projects. Each team gets to choose what projects best meets their talents. For instance this week the team is offering a soccer camp and will be doing some light construction on the new church plant.
The goal is to send people back home with a fire under their butts ready to change their local communities. This is right up my alley. I love missions and I love investing in youth (although teams consist of all ages). This ministry is killing two birds with one stone. by affecting the local community and inspiring others to do the same back at home.
What will we do when there are no groups here? Well summer of 2010 is already completely booked in Costa Rica. That’s why there is talk of expanding into other countries so teams aren’t turned away. Spring and Winter breaks see many teams roll through. During the breaks we would be able to minister on a more personal level. These times also allow opportunities to arise for future groups.
Any questions, just ask.
